Day two at Asia Pacifics

Another sunny and breezy day at Southport for day 2 of the Asia Pacific Championships.

The 303 singles and SKUD18’s started the days racing with 2 races each, which took place in front of an appreciative crowd at Hollywell.

Day one’s leader in the 303 singles, Japan’s Niwa Takumi, had a second and third place today, but remains 5 points ahead of Australians Stephen Griffiths and Bruce James who shared the honours with a win each in today’s two races.

In the SKUD18’s the 1st and 2nd positions were reversed from day 1, with Neil Rowthorn taking both wins from yesterday’s 2 race winner Brent Geritz. The pair are locked on 6 points each, going into day 3, 8 points ahead of Paul Bird in 3rd place.

The afternoon races for the Liberties and 303 doubles were moved down the Broadwater as winds strengthened.

In the Liberty fleet, the placings remained the same as yesterday, with Hong Kong’s Yuen Wai Foo from Australia’s Charlie Weatherly with New Zealand’s John Buchanan in 3rd place. The Kiwi is sailing the original Liberty prototype – boat number 855. The surprize packet of the Liberty fleet so far has been Hansa sailing newcomer, Hawaii’s Michael Lung. An experienced sailor, but at his first major Hansa Class Championships, Michael has been up at the front of the fleet in most races, narrowly missing a win in race 3. He currently sits in 6th place.

In the 303 doubles, reigning Asia Pacific Champions, Chris Symonds and Manuela Klinger, showed the fleet a clean pair of heels to take another 2 bullets, putting them 15 points ahead of their nearest rivals – Craig & Sarah Millsom- with 3 days to go.

Day 3 racing sees the Libertys and 303 doubles sail in the morning, with the 303 singles and SKUD18’s in the afternoon, followed by a regatta dinner.
